"The most important thing to me when selecting subject matter is that the image is composed of shapes that I can make into an interesting design. Once I have selected a subject, the enjoyable part of the creative process begins and I am free to experiment with color, key, and mood. I hope to initially attract the viewer with how I’ve portrayed the image; but it is with the more abstract qualities of the painting, its spatial design, color harmonies and painterly brushwork, that I hope to hold them." James McFarlane is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. He has served on the Board of Directors and as president of the Philadelphia Water Color Society and Greater Norristown Art League. McFarlane teaches watercolor painting at Woodmere Art Museum, Greater Norristown Art League and has taught at the Wayne Art Center. He conducts workshops, juries shows, demonstrates and is a featured speaker for local and international groups. A recipient of the Philadelphia Water Color Society's Best of Show Award in 2002 and 2003, McFarlane was also honored with the PWCS Crest Medallion for "Consistent Excellence." Corporate collections include: The Blue Cross Corporation, The Subaru Corporation, The ARA Corporation, Spring-House Estates Corporation, The Pew Collection, The Clark Ladner Firm and the Montgomery County, PA Bar Association. McFarlane was the 1998 artist for the American Cancer Society Holiday Card Campaign and is included in Who’s Who in America, 2001, 2002 and 2003. He is represented by the Riverbank Gallery, in Stockton, New Jersey and Hardcastle Gallery in Centreville, DE. |
